New EU Regulations on Packaging Waste Reduction and Sustainability

The European Union (EU) has introduced new regulations focused on reducing packaging waste and encouraging sustainable practices. Key highlights include:

  • Binding Re-use Targets: The regulations establish mandatory targets for reusing packaging materials.
  • Single-Use Packaging Restrictions:
    1. Limits on single-use plastic packaging for pre-packed fruits, hospitality beverages, and small toiletry products.
    2. By 2040, single-use plastic bottles must contain up to 65% recycled content.
  • Support for Reusable Options: Take-away businesses are required to allow customers to bring their own containers for food and beverages.
  • Implementation Timeline: The regulation will come into effect 18 months after its entry into force.

These measures aim to foster a circular economy and reduce environmental impact.
