The European Commission has announced a ban on bisphenol A (BPA) and other hazardous bisphenols in materials that come into contact with food, effective 20 January 2025. This decision follows the EFSA's (European Food Safety Authority) assessment, which concluded that current exposure levels to bisphenol A pose significant health risks. Key points of the announcement include:

  • Health Risks:
Bisphenol A (BPA) has been linked to various health concerns, including interference with the immune system and increased risks of allergic pneumonia, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis.
  • Current Restrictions:
BPA is already prohibited in baby bottles, sippy cups, and coatings that release bisphenol A into food for children under three years old.
  • Extended Protection:
The new regulation extends the ban to protect consumers of all ages, ensuring that food packaging and other materials containing bisphenol A will no longer be permitted for use in any food-related products.
  • Transitional Period:
During the transitional period, pre-existing bisphenol-containing packaging can still be sold under previous regulations, with full enforcement of the new rule taking effect on 20 January 2025.

This regulatory change aims to protect public health by eliminating exposure to bisphenol A in food contact materials, with a focus on long-term health and safety.
