Assembly Bill No. 1527, introduced by the Committee on Governmental Organization in California, updates the Business and Professions Code to expand the definition of “beer”. The amendment allows the use of various grains in production while ensuring fermentation occurs in drinkable water, maintaining quality standards
The bill also clarifies regulations on barrel-aged beer, stating that beer aged in previously used wooden barrels will still be classified as beer, rather than being categorized as a mixture with other alcoholic beverages like sake
These changes aim to modernize beer production standards, ensuring clarity and consistency in classification while preserving traditional brewing integrity
